Amazons and Dishwashing Maching4 of 10 |
This picture series is composed of 7 fragments from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus* representing a mythical battle between Ancient Greeks and Amazons and 3 inside views of the artist’s (almost empty) dishwasher.
The very different subjects are collapsed, combined, confused, as the aesthetic importance attributed to classical art is mixed up with the pressing banalities of everyday life. The mundane questions and quibbles of the day to day and splashes of color give a ‘Pop’ like cheerfulness to the epic violence (between men and women, between the Greek ideal of civilization and the barbaric other). On the other hand, the pure functionalism of the dishwashers aspires to formality and monumentality as the neat and clean rows of plate holders stand in for a succession of ancient columns. The matter of fact descriptions of the battle (extracted from the catalogue of the British Museum) and the colored cutlery, mimicking the poses of the Greeks and Amazons, recall the cold violence which echoes through the empty temple of domestic chores. *The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, circa 350 BC in Bodrum, Turkey, was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. Many fragments of its famous carvings are in the British Museum.
